// why it matters

Why gold pips confuse even experienced traders

Unlike forex majors, there's no single industry-standard pip size for XAUUSD — and getting it wrong means your real risk can be 10x what you intended.

Two conventions, same word

Most MT4/MT5 brokers quote gold to 2 decimal places (e.g. 2335.50) and treat a $0.01 move as 1 pip — identical in spirit to a forex pip. Others quote to 1 decimal and call a $0.10 move a pip, or use the word "point" for the $0.01 move instead. The math is the same either way; only the label changes.

Why it matters for risk

If you size a stop loss assuming $0.01 = 1 pip on a broker that actually uses $0.10 = 1 pip, your real dollar risk is 10x larger than planned. Always check your broker's contract specification page before your first live gold trade, and confirm with a demo trade if you're unsure.

Pip value doesn't move with the gold price

Unlike a forex cross pair, XAUUSD is quoted directly in USD, so pip value per lot is constant regardless of whether gold is at $1,900 or $2,900 — it only depends on lot size and the pip convention.

Gold Pip Calculator — FAQ

Common questions about calculating pips and pip value on XAUUSD.

How do you calculate pips in XAUUSD?+
Most brokers quote XAUUSD to 2 decimal places, so 1 pip = a $0.01 move in the gold price (e.g. 2335.50 to 2335.51). Pip value in dollars = pip size × lot size × contract size (100 oz per standard lot). At 1.00 lot, 1 pip is worth $1.00.
What is the pip value of XAUUSD per lot?+
On the $0.01-pip convention: 1 standard lot = $1.00 per pip, 1 mini lot (0.10) = $0.10 per pip, 1 micro lot (0.01) = $0.01 per pip. This is constant — it doesn't change with the gold price.
Is a gold pip $0.01 or $0.10?+
It depends on the broker. Most retail MT4/MT5 brokers use $0.01 as 1 pip. Some use $0.10, or call the $0.01 move a "point" instead. Check your broker's contract specification — sizing with the wrong convention means 10x more or less risk than intended.
How many pips is a typical XAUUSD daily move?+
XAUUSD typically moves 150-300 pips ($1.50-$3.00) per day under normal conditions on the $0.01-pip convention, and significantly more during high-impact news like US CPI or a Fed rate decision.
How is this different from the lot size calculator?+
This tool answers "how much is a pip worth?" and "how many pips between two prices?". The lot size calculator answers the reverse question — "what lot size should I use for my risk %?" — using the pip value this tool computes.
